Feel the Rhythm, Taste the Life, Love the Blue — Discover Laborie
Community Tourism
Our Philosophy and Our Vision for Community based Tourism
In Laborie, tourism begins and ends with community. Our charm lies not in crowded resorts, but in everyday rhythms — fishers building fishpots, sea bathers and seamoss farmers tending the tides, crafters shaping heritage into art, and families welcoming visitors with warmth. This is Community based Tourism (CBT): a model where the community itself is the hotel, and local people lead, benefit, and protect what makes Laborie unique.
As part of the Blue Tourism Initiative, we embrace the ocean as both livelihood and legacy. Every accommodation, kayak tour, fishing trip, seamoss drink, and meal contributes to the health of our bay and the well being of our people.
Tourism here sustains livelihoods and strengthens resilience. From MSMEs to accommodation owners, each enterprise is guided by sustainability. The Laborie Development Foundation (LDF) ensures tourism remains a tool for empowerment — where people and nature shape livelihoods, and every experience sustains the coast we call home.
Thriving Traditions
In Laborie, tourism begins and ends with community. Our village’s charm lies not in grand resorts or crowded beaches, but in the rhythm of everyday life — fisher building fishpots on shore at dawn or dusk, sea bathers frolicking with the waves, crafters shaping heritage into art, and families welcoming visitors with genuine warmth. This is the essence of Community based Tourism (CBT): a model where the community is the hotel within which the rooms are scattered, and local people lead, benefit, and protect what makes Laborie unique.
The Blue Tourism Connection
Laborie is proud to be part of the Blue Tourism Initiative, a Caribbean wide movement that promotes sustainable coastal and marine tourism. Blue Tourism recognizes the ocean as both livelihood and legacy — a source of food, culture, and identity. Through this approach, we align tourism with conservation, ensuring that every kayak tour, fishing trip, every glass of seamoss beverage, and seaside meal contributes to the health of our bay and the well being of our people.
Tourism that Sustains Livelihoods and supports a resilient Future for people and Community
Our tourism supports local livelihoods across generations. Accommodation owners commit to sustainable practices. Fishers share traditional techniques through “Catch and Cook” experiences; seamoss farmers and producers invite visitors to learn about sustainable aquaculture and local nourishment; crafters and small enterprises showcase handmade products that tell Laborie’s story. Each blue-green enterprise is part of a growing network of micro and small medium enterprises (MSMEs) strengthened through the Laborie Development Foundation’s community tourism programmes.
Protecting Our Coast and Culture
Sustainability in Laborie means balance — between people and nature, progress and preservation. We will work to protect our coastal and marine ecosystems through responsible tourism practices, waste and water management, and habitat conservation. Visitors are invited to experience this harmony firsthand, becoming partners in protecting the bay, mangroves, and reefs that sustain our way of life.
A Shared Vision for the Future
The Laborie Development Foundation (LDF) leads this vision, connecting tourism development with the broader community goal of a “culturally vibrant village where people enjoy a high quality of life and participate fully in development.” Through training, collaboration, and innovation, the Foundation ensures that tourism remains a tool for empowerment — not exploitation — and that every visitor encounter strengthens the bond between people, nature, and culture.
Laborie’s difference is simple yet profound: here, tourism is not an industry apart from the community — it is the community. It is where people and nature shape livelihoods from the ridge to the reef, and where every experience helps sustain the coastal community, we call home.
