Strengthening the Seamoss Enterprise: Equipment Handover to Laborie Producers
Laborie, Saint Lucia – June 2026
The Laborie Pilot of the Blue Tourism Initiative (BTI) reached another milestone with the formal handover of equipment to local seamoss beverage producers. This investment supports community enterprises involved with farming and transforming seamoss, a traditional coastal resource, into modern, nutritious products for local and international markets.

Seamoss farming in Laborie blends tradition with innovation, and the BTI Pilot has emphasized seamoss as a blue-green livelihood, linking marine ecosystems with household resilience. The new equipment — including makeshift rafts, drying racks, and blending units, will help producers improve hygiene, efficiency, and product consistency. By strengthening local capacity, the handover supports enterprises like Moss By Joe and Jeanne’s Seamoss in the production of smooth, creamy seamoss drinks that are already gaining recognition for being “pure, nutritious, locally made.”
For Laborie’s seamoss producers, the equipment represents more than tools, it is a pathway to resilience. With modern equipment, producers can expand their reach, meet growing demand, and ensure that benefits flow back into the community.

This initiative reflects the core values of Blue Tourism: It supports sustainable marine livelihoods, builds awareness of climate impacts on coastal communities, and strengthens MSMEs. The handover of equipment is therefore not just an investment in production, but in Laborie’s identity as a hub of sustainable, community-led tourism.
The Laborie Development Foundation, CANARI, and BTI partners extend gratitude to all seamoss farmers, processors, and beverage innovators. Together, they are ensuring that seamoss remains a symbol of resilience, heritage, and innovation — anchoring Laborie’s future in sustainable coastal enterprise. The Foundation commits to continuing investments in this blue-green enterprise be supporting a group of women farmers and youth with training programmes that will strengthen and skills in sustainable aquaculture, food safety, relating the seamoss story, and developing other value-added products.
